On Stockholm's morning water, a ferry rises. The Candela P-12, an electric boat on computer guided underwater wings, lifts its hull clear of the waves and flies, shrinking its wake to a ripple and the commute from 55 minutes to about 30\. After its first full seasons of service the verdict came in on every measure: 95 per cent less carbon than the diesel boat on the same run, 84 per cent less energy per passenger kilometre, and seats so loved that departures kept selling out.

So 2026 has become the year the flying ferry went global. Stockholm is expanding the service deeper into its archipelago, Norway has ordered twenty for the world's largest electric hydrofoil fleet, and deliveries are beginning for Mumbai, Berlin, Thailand and the Maldives, with Mumbai's airport run set to fall from around two hours to 35 minutes. Water is the oldest road through every great city, and it is quietly becoming the cleanest one again. The future arrived flying, and it barely leaves a wake.
