# Everyone gets to the lookout

Somewhere in the Grampians this week, a volunteer will meet a stranger at a trailhead and help haul them up a mountain. The chair is called a TrailRider, a single wheeled all terrain chair that needs people front and back, and Parks Victoria trains the volunteers who do the hauling. They are called Sherpas, which tells you everything about the spirit of it. The same service runs in the Dandenong Ranges. Alongside it, Parks Victoria and Blind Sports Victoria run Walk in the Park, where trained volunteers go along as park companions, helping with orientation, reading the signs aloud and describing what is around the corner, so that a walk in the bush is a walk in the bush for everybody.

The coast is catching up too. Beach wheelchairs, with their fat balloon tyres that float over sand where an ordinary chair sinks, now wait at Wilsons Promontory, Point Nepean and Coolart in Victoria, and at the visitor centre in Noosa, where volunteers help with the booking and show you how it works. Frankston has gone further and is running a pilot to become the most accessible beach in the country, with trained staff and volunteers through the summer season. None of this is complicated technology. It is a chair, a roster and a few people willing to give up a Saturday. Which is worth knowing next time you are standing somewhere beautiful, because the difference between that view being for some people and being for everybody is usually just somebody offering.
