In 2010 two Sydney friends, Darryl Nichols and Andrew Valder, added a second hand stall to a beach festival at Bondi on a whim, hoped for thirty garage sales across Waverley and got 130. That whim became the Garage Sale Trail, a weekend every spring when whole suburbs open their garages at once, backed today by more than 120 councils and three state governments. Over sixteen years four million Australians have bought or sold on the trail, 7.2 million pre loved things have found a second home instead of a bin, and households, charities and community groups have made more than 52 million dollars from the stuff they no longer needed. This year's trail runs over two weekends, 7 and 8 November and 14 and 15 November, with 7,925 sales already on the map and more than two million items listed, and it is the last one the Garage Sale Trail Foundation will run. "We started Garage Sale Trail because reuse was a no brainer," says director Barbara Gill, who points out that second hand has gone from a nice idea to the mainstream in the years since. Now the foundation has opened the door for a new custodian, a brand or an organisation, to carry the trail forward.

Councils are making the most of the send off. Port Macquarie Hastings, which had the most sellers of any council in the country in 2024 and kept 22,700 items out of landfill that year, is adding a Repair Fair at the library on Sunday 8 November. Port Stephens mayor Leah Anderson calls it the perfect year for her community to lead by example. Listing a sale is free and comes with signs and a how to guide, and shoppers plan a route on the trail's map. Corrine de Mestre, Port Macquarie's resource recovery officer, puts the bigger picture simply: nearly half of our carbon emissions come from how we make, use and throw away everyday things, so a Saturday spent passing them on is not a small thing at all. Gill's own sign off is the hopeful one. "Who knows what the future brings, but we know one thing for sure," she says: reuse is here to stay.
