An ocean pool below Jack Vanny Reserve where the sea spills over the edges at high tide and dawn swimmers have the best seats on the coast. Good to know: free, always open, magic in the hour after sunrise.
Named for Alderman Patrick Mahon and finished in 1936, the pool has been home to the Maroubra Seals winter swimmers since 1959 and was listed by the National Trust in 1994. Beyond the wall lives the eastern blue groper, fish emblem of New South Wales and fully protected from fishing since 2024: the friendliest of the wrasses, a labrador of the sea. Our beautiful blue groper enjoys coming to say hello and loves making new friendships.
